Islamic Etiquette

On the authority of Abdullah ibn Amr (may God be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked: “Who are the best of people?” He replied: “Everyone who is pure of heart and truthful of tongue.” They said: “We understand truthful of tongue, but what is pure of heart?” He said: “It is the one who is pious and pure, in whom there is no sin, no transgression, no malice, and no envy.”

A Note on the Hadith:

The word “makhmum” in Arabic comes from “khamm,” which means silence, dignity, and tranquility. It is said, “khamma al-shay’a,” meaning he concealed or covered it. Here, it refers to the heart that is veiled from afflictions and evils, thus finding peace and tranquility, and being free from psychological illnesses and sins. It is the heart that is purified and cleansed from all evil.
