Establishment of the first fully Muslim-run Islamic cemetery in Germany
The German city of Wuppertal in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia has approved the establishment of the first fully Muslim-run Islamic cemetery in Germany, following more than 15 years of planning and legal and administrative procedures.
The approval came after an amendment to the burial law in North Rhine-Westphalia, which now allows for the establishment of cemeteries managed according to Islamic rites and under the supervision of recognized Islamic institutions.
The project had faced legal and administrative obstacles due to certain aspects of Islamic burial, such as burial in a shroud and the prohibition of moving remains after burial, as well as the need for large spaces.
Samir Bouaissa, Vice President of the Central Council of Muslims in Germany, said the project represents “a profound shift in the recognition of Muslim citizens in Germany” and reflects the ability of Islamic institutions to operate within the country’s democratic laws and institutions.
He added that the project is not only for the city of Wuppertal but is a “milestone” in the history of Muslims in Germany and a European model for reconciling religious privacy with integration within a state governed by the rule of law.
